Rumours are spreading across social media that Zayn Malik from One Direction left the popular boy band to join Islamic State in Syria. The rumours may originate from various sources, but a large portion owe their existence to an article on exposednews.net with published an article that reads in part –
” In breaking news today, Zayn Malik of One Direction is to reportedly leave the super group and travel to Syria to join Islamic State, also known as ISIS. The group’s manager spoke to the press earlier today: ‘It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the sad news that Zayn is leaving the group from today, to accept the calling of the Islamic State rebels in Syria and Iraq. We’re sad to see him go, but we understand that this is something Zayn has been talking about for some while, we hope people will respect his personal wishes. ”
The rumours began spreading only moments after the official statement announcing Zayn’s departure was released, and needless to say they are total nonsense, and also somewhat racist.
However they have spread like wildfire across sites like Twitter, and whilst most spectators have successfully identified the rumours as nothing more than a joke, it seems some are not quite so sure.
No, Zayn Malik has not joined ISIS. The rumours are either jokes or people reposting this Exposednews article. To confirm the story is false (going through the motions, somewhat) there have been no press releases or statements that would confirm this story, which would receive worldwide mainstream press attention if it were true.
